The first - a letter from Arethas to the Emir of Damascus, sent on behalf of Emperor Romanos around 921 - defends Christian dogma and criticizes Islam. The second stems from Euthymios Zigabenos' Encyclopedia of Heresies, written on behalf of Emperor Alexios at the beginning of the 12th century; in it, he attacks the "Saracens."
