An Ashram आश्रम is a spiritual or a holy retreat or a place where people stays permanently or visit and stay for few days to attain spiritual knowledge. All ashrams are headed by a Guru who controls all the functions in the place. In old days each son of kings goes to their Rajguru’s ashram to take spiritual knowledge. In the Hindu religion, people are encouraged to seek out deeper spiritual training with a guru. This often involves spending time with other believers in an isolated communal center called an ashram. The ashram may also serve as the principal home of a yogi, guru or other revered mystic. While living in an ashram, the instructor and believers all share a simple vegetarian diet and spend many hours in meditation and work. In these community centers are people are treated as equal irrespective of their status in real life and hence one can shed his ego. Today the term ashram often denotes a locus of Indian cultural activity such as yoga, music study or religious instruction. An ashram would typically be located far from human habitation, in forests or mountainous regions, amidst refreshing natural surroundings conducive to spiritual instruction and meditation. The residents of an ashram regularly performed spiritual and physical exercises, such as the various forms of Yoga. Other sacred rituals such as Yajnas were also performed. Many ashrams also served as Gurukuls or residential schools for children.
