Book Summary
Brigham Henry Roberts was a prolific writer who, during his lifetime, published thirty-five books, scores of pamphlets, and over 300 articles. His sensitivity to the real-life implications of theological ideas and his comprehensive grasp of historical events gave his works a quality that captured the interest and admiration of not only scholars but of a large segment of Utah's general population. One of Roberts's virtues as church leader and researcher was a determination to raise the intellectual level of LDS people. He introduced readers to issues of evidence and reasoning and wanted to acquaint them with "up-to-date thinking", as he called it. True, some of his conclusions have not withstood the impact of later discoveries, but his writing shows a great mind honestly grappling with historical and doctrinal puzzles -- an exercise greatly needed in today's environment of easy answers and sentimental diversions.
