Book Summary
The doctrine of Christian Science, founded by the American Mary Baker Eddy in 1875, assumes that all evil in the world, including all forms of disease, is just an illusion and can be overcome by finding the true nature of God and His creation. Because of her healing successes, her new faith-based community soon found great popularity both in the US and abroad. In Germany in particular she found many adherents and temporarily obtained considerable influence in society, despite numerous opponents who fought her dangerous cult. This book examines the evolution of Christian Science in the land of Luther, from the establishment in the Empire, the persecution by the Nazi regime and the challenges of the post-war period, through the status it holds today. By including previously unknown historical sources and numerous interviews with advocates and critics of Christian Science, the author manages to draw a remarkably versatile and lively image of this faith-based community and its history.
