Book Summary
Between the early years of the fourteenth century and the early years of the fifteenth, England went through momentous social and political turbulence. The devastations of a mid-century plague, and the radicalization of the working classes which spilled over into open revolt, were but two of its manifestations. In uncertain times, it fell largely to the Church to impose order and intelligibility on the chances and changes of experience. Preachers were in the vanguard of the Church's efforts in this respect.
