Book Summary
This book contains "Phallic Worship" by Hodder M. Westropp and "Influence of the Phallic Idea in the Religions of Antiquity" by C. Staniland Wake (with an introduction, additional notes, and an appendix by Alexander Wilder). Both were papers read before the Anthropological Society of London on April 5th, 1870. The black & white drawings of ancient phallic (sexual) symbols highlight the authors' exposition of phallism in ancient pagan religions, the Bible and Christianity. The papers cover ancient India, Egypt, Greece and Rome, the Near East and early Judaism. The "phallic theory" of religion was an idea which captured a lot of attention in the early to mid 19th-century. The Victorian rediscovery of, and fascination with, sex worship underlays some forms of modern occultism.
