Creationism is both a subtle and militantly-represented faith in the absolute truth of the Bible, but also in other accounts of creation. Therefore, representatives of evangelical and now also of Islamist tendencies require an appropriate subordination, or at least reinterpretation, of scientific knowledge. At this time, the majority of Americans believes in creation. The development has long since also reached Europe, and thus also Germany. The increasing spread of creationism threatens the acceptance of scientific knowledge and increasingly affects the education system. Thus, The Academy of Public Sciences in Erfurt, Germany, invited evolutionary biologists, Islamic scholars, scientific historians, socio-biologists, theologians, and the responsible representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for a symposium, the lectures of which are presented in this volume.
