Excerpt: Ill THE JOURNEY EAST DURING the opening months of 1781 the Shakers at Watervliet, who called themselves "Believers in Christ's Second Appearing," manifested increased zeal. By the searching power of the Holy Spirit, hearts were purified, faith built up and souls were growing in susceptibility to spirit influence, as the fires of Divine purity burned out the old life and the breath of God's Mother Love imparted the new. Believers increased in spirituality and understanding and became better fitted to care for the scores and hundreds of souls that were being born into the kingdom. From the path that ledthis spiritual Mother to find the souls she had borne upon her heart, no storm nor struggle could turn her course....
